Alexander Mundy
I assume that longer screen cables would be limited to OEM orders. If so, what are the Zif connector and flat cable specs so a DIY extension could be made?

SSV
So it's possible to move away from the flat/flex ribbon to a "pigtail/jumper"? are there any capacitive issues to take into account with longer runs of traditional jumpers?
JLIT
Also interested in alternatives to the ribbon oem option.

turbocad6
I always assumed you couldn't extend this much at all, otherwise a longer ribbon would have been used long ago. it would be awesome to be wrong in that assumption though .
Alexander Mundy
Can't find the FCI 59453-08211ECHLF zif socket in stock anywhere. I did find what looks like a compatible socket for the cable in a bottom contact with the FCI 59453-08111DCHLF http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=59453-081110EDHLFvirtualkey64910000virtualkey649-59453081110EDHLF . Was planning on putting 2 of these together back to back and using an FPC jumper cable such as the Molex 98266-0083 http://www.mouser.com/Search/ProductDetail.aspx?R=98266-0083virtualkey98266-0083virtualkey538-98266-0083 to extend the display. I realize I will have to notch the ends of the cables for socket fit. Got some of the sockets and various lengths of cable in my Mouser cart. Could someone be so kind as to verify that the FCI 59453-08111DCHLF is compatible with the display cable?
John
Yep, that will work fine. The notch is important, otherwise if you drop the device the cable can get jolted out, and nobody wants that. John
blueridgedog
Mundy, if you find a set of parts that work, please post a definitive list so others can follow your path.

blueridgedog
So you are going to solder two sockets together? Like to see it when done.

Alexander Mundy
I have various lengths and they do seem to fit although the ends are a little thicker. I haven't had time to cut the notches and solder sockets (which looks like a bear to do without a tiny board). Work is overwhelming right now so working long days 7 days a week. Guest
What a pain in the butt!!! The connectors are way to small for me to solder together with my iron, the solder likes to bridge I was able to solder it this way. It works. my boards will be here tomorrow I'll still post a pic of the screen working on the ribbon. I need to see about a high doller soldering iron

Willy
Laguz75,Take a look at this Hakko clone from Hobby King, (some links below) I got one recently and I'm very impressed with how well it works, cost me $25 shipped to New York from their North East USA warehouse. I picked up some more tips in assorted sizes, it comes with a very fine tip which would be great for those zif's, but you'll need a larger tip for wire 20 ga and above, you can get tips from amazon. Also there is a link to a youtube video showing side by side comparison to this station and a real Hakko, the guy opens the box and shows the insides of both of them. I was quite surprised just how heavy the unit is and it looks like they made a couple improvements since that video. The temperature control is very accurate, I checked it against my Fluke meter with a Fluke thermocouple, I didn't have to adjust mine but there is an adjustment for the temp if needed. For the price, it's a pretty good station and works very well, I soldered some 12 ga wires to a 200 board and the 510 a couple days ago and had no problems getting a very impressive solder joint, key was a larger tip that wouldn't cool as soon as it touched the joint, and good no clean flux. https://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=19240http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00KYVV9DMhttp://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AQARTRQ

I bought the wrong ones there like 5" but it looks like I can cut them down to the size I need. I am going to try soldering 24 gage wire on just to see if I can I might have a ideal for making a detachable face plate like some car stereos have. Once my boards come in that will be the real test. I have a 200 but the screen holder is glued on so I couldn't try out the ribbons.

turbocad6
so are you saying that the screen works fine with your 5" extension? you played with it a bit no glitches or anything? like you said would be really cool as a better quick disconnect than directly at the board with the ziff. using a ziff to pin adapter would open up a lot of possibilities with board installation too. blueridgedog
It would be amazing if there was a true extension cable rather than the parts to create one. The VS one has the screen in a "far away" place, so once we get a look inside, we may be able to source something.
retird
Think you may find the VS rdna40 uses standard screen/ribbon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__0hD-h0ufY
