bnitch
Why not make the holes a more standard size, such as M2. Screws and standoff's in 1.6 or 1.7mm are so hard to come by. Even #0 screws are limited in length availability. If you don't want to use a face plate you are in for a tough time.
mikepetro
Cant answer to their decision on size, but 0-80 screws are ready available in sizes up to an inch long.http://www.mcmaster.com/#machine-screws/=yq29id
turbocad6
it's all about miniaturizing everything as much as practical, screw terminals for the wire connections and a push in replaceable fuse would all make things easier to deal with too, but space is a primary concern
bnitch
#0-80 turned up much better of a selection, I was searching under #0-42 and 1.6mm ( as the diagram showed hole size to be 1.7mm ) and was coming up short. Had not seen anyone mention that size up to this point.
turbocad6
Just picked up some 0-80 and 0-90 screws and nuts and #0 wood srews at my local hobby store, anyplace that sells model trains should have stuff like this i think if you dont want to wait for delivery

You might want to take a look at it, lots of good info in there.
bnitch
I'm putting them in wood boxes so the Screws need to be flat head and I just need to find the right length of standoff's from inside face of box. Maybe I should have just said there are way more M2 standoff's than anything smaller.
blueridgedog
It is an interesting observation that we are getting to a wire size where screw terminals for the wire would be an interesting alternative.
