Twist the strands together so they are smooth and tight together and then tin the wire. Snip off the excess length after tinning. Then insert the wire in the pins's solder cup and solder. I've gotten 12 AWG in there so 14 should fit. I know you already have the FDV but the Varitube 510s are definite better and cost about the same.
