1. Maybe I should be talking to you more about getting my titanium builds tasting and working great than messing with SS too much lol. Do you just use the Steam Engine Ti1 default? Where do you get your Ti wire? Do you do contact coils at all?
2. Ah. So do you think I should continue to use the build I already made and eventually the "gunk" may burn off? Or should I just ditch it?
3. SS430 .. I listed the composition, it has less than 1% Nickel and has about 20% Chromium. As far as Titanium having a taste, absolutely not, it's a tasteless & odorless metal assuming you have cleaned Grade 1. Kanthal is especially on a Clapton is more than likely your culprit, I'd imagine your fingers had nice black streaks .. so I'd clean your coil .. soak in alcohol, clean with a brush, soak in water and then allow to dry. BTW I clean all of my wire with 91% Isopropyl alcohol before wrapping the coils, clean as stated above, and then low wattage pulse (dark orange; 10W single / 20W dual). The problem is in the processing especially polished wire gets machine oil and metal dust embedded into the wire. Here's a good link with the composition of various SS grades - http://www.stainlesssales.com/stainless-steel-grades.html
I only have 70% alcohol and I do use it to clean the titanium and I tried to clean the kanthal but I ended up kinking it up by messing with it off the spool. When I wrap claptons I feed the wire directly off the spool. I use my fingers and thumb to hold the wrapping wire when I do it and everytime afterwards there are black streaks on my fingers. I figured I'd wiped off most of the dirt/oil with my fingers but I guess I didn't. When you say you low wattage pulse, do you do that with titanium? even spaced coils?
4. SS430 should be 'more accurate' looking at the differences between 400F~800F, but I haven't a clue about its oxidation, leaching, etc characteristics. SS430 Fe, <0.12% C, 16-18% Cr, <0.75% Ni, <1.0% Mn, <1.0% Si, <0.040% P, <0.030% S Being straight up, I want to avoid Cr, Ni, Al, etc long-term. However, it's certainly a wire to play with in TC. I'm just having a hard time rationalizing Platinum wire because of its price. SS alloys in contrast appeal is it's cheap. Keep in mind, a Titanium coil will outlast the Atty itself... So price!?
I just can't get over the flavor difference with SS vs titanium. I just built a Ti1/KA1 clapton dual coil and it just tastes...funny. I only asked about SS430 because it's popular on that Unkamen site that everybody talks about. Also (and this I don't understand) on the site it lists its 430 as "nickel-free". Doesn't all SS have nickel in it?? It wouldn't be SS430 anymore without I would think.
5. I'm not sure what's going on with my Ti1/KA1 clapton. I remember when I first vaped a kanthal/nicotine clapton coming from only basic kanthal microcoils, the flavor difference was amazing. I'm not getting that with this. It's more wet and dense I guess but it doesn't necessarily taste better to me. I get more of a throat hit and oddly, less of the menthol hit (I add menthol to all my juices).
6. Jaquith, what do you think of 430 SS? It's resistivity seems to be much higher than 316 and 304. Might this translate to a more reliable and accurate temp control?
7. What temp do you use this at?
8. I just built and tried a Titanium/Kanthal Clapton build for the first time since I've been vaping strictly titanium and/or SS for weeks. I thought it tasted a little funny and wondered if it just needed to be broken in. Might it be that iron that I taste??
9. In my previous post I noted that I don't know the wire lengths of the wires that I used so I have no idea what to put in the wire wizard, especially for the 36g outer.
10. When experimenting with wire TCR I don't bother to work up a polynomial curve. Just enter a TCR value in the "special" entry box (Ohm coefficient per degree Kelvin). My recollection is with unkamen Ti I use 0.0041 and with a 26 AWG Ti wrapped with 32 AWG kanthal I use 0.0037.
What would you use for 24g Ti1 from Lightning Vapes with 36g KA1 outer wrap? I just put a 10 wrap dual coil 2.5mm ID 24gTi1/36KA1 Clapton build in my Velocity. Been using it with the Steam Engine default Ti1 csv. It's been ok. I had to turn the temp and wattage down so I guess its not as accurate as it could be. I turned it down not because I was getting dry hits but because the vape was hotter than I liked it. I have no idea how much kanthal I used so I don't know what to put in Steam Engine's Wire Wizard to make a CSV. Can anyone just recommend a TCR? Here's a pic:
11. That's a good idea. Have you had luck with SS as the core?
12. What atty is that? It looks funky, lol. So that looks spaced to me. Is it just that last part where you angled it up that's spaced? Anyway, I'm thinking the 24g Ti1 that I have will be way too low of a resistance with a dual coil fused Clapton build, which is the only way I would do it. Plus, I think I will try spaced for now so the resistance will be even lower. Maybe I'll just try a regular clapton dual coil first. The rdas I use currently are the El Cabron (3 post but can fit huge builds with outer AFC design), Twisted Messes (4 post and outer AFC), and Velocity (2 post, even with inner AFC can fit huge builds as everyone knows). I just hope the SteamEngine Ti CSV will work with it.
13. I used to build and use only Kanthal fused claptons all day before I got a DNA200 and got into temp control. I still have a lot of 36g Kanthal left. I've been thinking about claptoning titanium and/or SS but have been waiting for others do it and talk about it first enough before wasting my tire. So when you did this fused Clapton, did you wrap it spaced or contact? I'll be using LightningVapes Ti 1, I wonder if that will change its effectiveness for better or worse than SSV. I currently use SteamEngine's Ti1 curve for my Ti builds and it works great.
14. Wow. Ok, I'm uploading these profiles on my VT200 right now. So which one of these CSV files do you think will work best with the UD 316L? And by saying you try to keep the preheat between 2-3, are you talking about the punch?
15. How off do you think it is between 500 and 600 F? And is it off by hotter or cooler than displayed temp? Because I usually like to vape my titanium builds at around 550-570 F and 65 watts. I had been using the same settings for my SS316L builds with the 0.00105 TCR setting. I'm now using your V4 at 560 F 55w 120w preheat/0.5s/5 punch (dual UD SS316L 24g build 11 wrap 3mm ID 0.23 ohm in my El Cabron) and it's pretty good. The V4 is a little hot like you say but the V3 is too cool and weak. The punch seems to hit too hard sometimes and when I tried a 120w/0.75s/5 punch I got close to dry hits. When I used the same 120w/0.5s/5 punch with the manually set 0.00105 TCR I never seemed to notice the punch or got dry hits though.
16. Great! I hope they are still working when I get home tonight to download them! Yeah, with your V7, it was just way too weak using my UD 24g. I hope this is the answer. My builds are usually around 0.15-0.25
17. When I click your v4 link it just brings me to the filedropper home page. Is there any other way I can get it?
18. Yeah when I click on the links it just asks me if I want to upload something. Did you post them somewhere else I can try?
19. I can't wait to get home and try these. The UD 24g SS 316L is exactly the SS that I've been using. I tried your first csv weeks ago but it never worked for me. At 570 F and 60 watts (how I like to vape), it was just a really cool weak thin vape that kept cutting out when the wicks were still wet. So lately I've just been using a profile where I manually set the TCR to 0.001.
20. Wtf. I guess I'll check for update? I thought I had it set to automatically update. Mine says I have to enter a minimum of 0.001 I just checked and I have version 1.0.32 Where can I update?
21. Between 0.0008 and 0.0100?? When I try to enter 0.00094 for SS316L, Escribe tells me that the minimum value I can enter is 0.001...
22. I made a thread in the Software and Firmware section. Is that the right place for it?
23. Please let us adjust the TCR in a profile to the 0.000x value! The Koopor Plus can do it for Nickel, Titanium, and Stainless Steel using the buttons on the mod itself. If a cheap Chinese mod can do it, and accurately, then surely Evolv can do it! It would be enormously helpful in the popular quest for Stainless Steel temp control accuracy especially considering the varied grades of SS wire out there.
24. Huh? That doesn't make sense. First of all mod resistance has not shown to have any major effect on temp control... The VT200 has a mod resistance of 0.0045. And all that number does is ever so slightly make your builds resistance more accurate. Secondly, that minor effect pales in comparison to a change of the same value in the TCR of a material. It can literally cause your temp to be 50 degrees off or more.
