After a few failed attempts with VirtualBox on El Capitan, I finally successfully connected to the DNA-200 using VMWare Fusion.
I was initially getting an EEPROM error, and loading/saving progress was very slow. Increasing the VM memory to 3GB and setting 2 processor cores increased the speed and reliability of the connection.
